“Mardi gras of the Sisypha”, the debut album of The Sedan Vault finally sees its limited edition vinyl re-release. And as you can tell, indeed it features a poster by yours truely, my first illustration work published actually.

Limited to 330 vinyls, this is obviously a collector’s item. Plus, the album is killer.

…how there’s only one month left to prepare my part of the upcoming expo. (May 30th till June 1st, Garcia Lorca, Volderstraat – Brussels)

Time for some action indeed. I plan to show a small dozen of works, all new but one. Feels kinda face against the wall really. Very much a deathline man though, but not for these type of things.

The usual thoughts ‘n’ doubts I guess, as dvlmn points out in the Delta commentings. Inherent to the process, or so it seems.

As for the release of the Sedan Vault’s vinyl I’m waiting for some newsflashes, but my guess is the vinyl (+ poster) will see light at around the same time as the expo, which would be brilliant timing, now wouldn’t it?

This week we’ll serve you another podcast: a vic&lloyd mix, almost exactly as broadcasted on De Hop, last Friday.

June 2007. Anneessens, BXL. My First Expo.

Indeed, I shit you not. Early month of June for the first time I’ll be participating in an expo. It’ll be a group exhibition featuring about 8 to 10 local artists. Cats from the quartier, combined in an expo with poverty, misery and le quartier tout court as central themes.

Friday the Buurtwinkel/Boutique du Quartier is moving from one side of place Anneessensplein to the other, moving in the former Oxfam shop. A small part of the building has been reserved to give a sneak preview of what’s to come in June. The official opening is scheduled for Friday, from 14h til 20h.

For this preview all artists were asked to deliver one or two pieces, so I got my Andre pimped up and may I say it sure looks cool to me. Come and check it out this Friday in De Buurtwinkel/Boutique du Quartier Anneessens. My guess is the mayor and some free drinks and nice people will be there too!

Hope to see some of you on Friday, let me know if you’re passing by, don’t want to miss out on any of your presences!

Last year I saw a whole lot of concerts. Only one to be classified in the rock genre. But it was a blast, it’s always a blast when you get the wall-of-sound type of vibe sizzling through your veins and at the same times detect some Daft Punk influences - at least that was my personal analysis.

Anyway, me and the rock genre were good friends back in puberty, we quickly grew apart, only to reunite in 2007. By none other than The Sedan Vault!

The Sedan Vault released their debut album “Mardi gras of the Sisypha” only last year and they’ve basically been touring around the country and the continent ever since. Building on a strong live reputation, I seriously recommend everybody to go see them live and obviously to buy the record, because…

This Spring the album is getting its proper vinyl release and guess what, it will come with a nice little extra: an official The Sedan Vault Poster, drawn by yours truly, edited by jtothec. My first illustrator job really, let there be more to follow!

The previews you might have noticed already, here’s the almost finished A1dre. It was hard getting out of this linear craze, it seems to have a hypnotising effect on me, a bit like wandering through a kingsized supermarket, but that’s another story. PS Does anyone have experienced working with 0.2 mm markers on cardboard yet?
The cardboard seems to trash my markers, one after the other.

So I found this really neat piece of plastic (50x67cm) down the road the other day, right. And, euh, well there you have it. You see. that’s all there is to it.
(All praises to my 6B pencil, my easel and place Anneessens for some solid neat plastic, thank you very much.)

Kwestie van een soortement portfolio samen te rapen, niewaar.

De foto is alweer even passé en ondertussen ben ik erachter waarom een heldere geest indertijd donkerdonkerbruin uitgevonden heeft.
Al dat ge-arceer neemt toch al gauw een avondje in beslag, en er is er maar één per dag natuurlijk. Wel lekker hypnotiserend, met m’n 0.2 mm stiftje in de hand.
Na verloop van tijd de blik op oneindig, dwars door het blad, zalig. (Owja, en dit is natuurlijk het vervolg op 016a maar dat wist u al wel)

Hot-Dàmn! De ppklts aesthetics spring/summer collection 2006 neemt nu wel erg concrete vormen aan. Het is slechts een kwestie van tijd voor de broeken eraan komen, al is dat natuurlijk een heikele kwestie, gezien de thematiek van de lijn.

U weet het, =lloyd= weet het. Ik geloof dat we klaar zijn voor de “ppklts clothing aesthetics 2006“. Smaken verschillen maar er zal altijd gekletst worden. ‘Geen gezeik, gewoon klappen’ zoals ze in Zwolle plachten te zeggen. Jatoch?!

Dat is dan het vervelende, ziet u. Het merendeel staat er, de essentie: grijs op wit, outlines moeilijk te omzeilen. Maar wat dan nog, het echte werk moet nog gebeuren. En dat zal het ook, net zoals de vader die zei: ” ow, you remember her?” Zeer zeker, doubtless.

Het raamwerk zal altijd mooier blijven dan het afgewerkte eindproduct. Daarom dat het hier nu staat. Ne schets, quoi. Suggesties zijn, zoals altijd, steeds welkom. Voor zij die durven te commenten.
(Ik hoor u niet als u niet comment, dat moge duidelijk zijn.)
Een goede nachtrust nog. Maandagen dreigen bij =lloyd= traditioneel vrij laat te worden. De zon zou opgaan als het zomer was, maar dat is het niet, dus alles is gepermitteerd.

Er even uit voor het weekend. Vanmiddag gekraakt, vanavond een afscheid, morgen een show, zondag een zondag en dan zijn we er wel weer, zo on-point als maar kan, of toch bij benadering.

Ik ben mij bewust van de egotrip die een blog is en wil van =lloyd=’s exemplaar geen meta-blog maken, geen blog over een blog. Dus daarom nog wat visuals, ofte artwork, uit de niet-zo-oude doos (het is Tookie op doek, onafgewerkt inderdaad):

Hoe fijn een blog kan zijn, dacht ik. En ik wist terstond niet meer wat geschreven. =lloyd= is de laatste tijd veel meer de man van de botte alcoholstift dan van de vlotte, scherpe pen. Het zal ook nog wel even zo blijven, voorspellen de laatste peilingen.

Acryl in alle kleuren, pizza- en andere dozen moeten eraan geloven, het is sterker dan mezelf. Het is koffie, chocolade, bananen en al wat goed is. Dat is het, u zal er over kijken maar het zal nog altijd zo zijn. Alcoholstift, waskoo, acryl en nog wat. Grabs me by the balls. Ooumph..

=lloyd=’s vijftigste, jawel! Vijftig posts al zijn we ver. Welkom aan alle nieuwkomers; veel werk om bij te benen. Blij dat de oudgedienden er ook nog steeds zijn. Allemaaal in steeds groteren getale zelfs, de kudde groeit.
En het is een kudde: gezapig kauwend, herkauwend en gedwee slikkend wat =lloyd= voorschotelt. Spijtige zaak, ik had het liever wat actiever gezien, een beetje (re)actie op zijn tijd smaakt altijd goed. Maar goed, op naar de volgende. En wel met deze man, voor de gelegenheid zelfs netjes klikbaar:

Euhm.. pizzadoosinterpretatie.

Laurent Garnier zei me ooit: “Als je je afvraagt, kan ik dit maken ja of neen, is het gepermitteerd?
Ga er dan voor en stel je verder geen vragen.” (=vic= zal het verhaal bevestigen.)

De vraag stellen is ze met andere woorden meteen beantwoorden en gelijk had hij. Sindsdien zit =lloyd= nog zelden stil. Kijken hoever je kan gaan. Om te zien wat erachter nog allemaal voor het grijpen ligt. Ik raad u hetzelfde aan. Dat zou ik kunnen doen in een lange uiteenzetting, al dan niet met verwijzingen naar de grote meesters maar het zou zonde zijn van uw en mijn tijd. De essentie staat hierboven al mooi vermeld en daarbij ook geïllustreerd. Dat zou moeten volstaan. Zoniet, laat maar komen die comments.

=lloyd= is ziek vandaag. De tweede, en belangrijkste, culturele voorkeur hebt u nog van me tegoed, maar het zal voor na het weekend zijn. Blij dat de sneeuw ondertussen weg is, kunnen we weer gezellig de baan op. Als de klieren nu nog wat zouden ontzwellen, het ware ook mooi meegenomen…

Voorrecensie Zappa (Barry Miles, 2005)

De beste manier om een biografie te toetsen aan haar waarde is ze aan een leek toe te vertrouwen, hem of haar er een tweetal weken in onder te dompelen en zien wat het oplevert. Weet de nitwit na afloop nog altijd van toeten noch blazen dan is het naslagwerk van bedenkelijke kwaliteit. Of het is niet meer dan dat, een naslagwerk, droog en dus enkel te verteren voor de die-hard afficionados.

Barry Miles’ “Zappa” doet beide. Ondergetekende nitwit weet nu wel zowat alles over het leven van de rocklegende maar echt boeien deed het boek niet. Nochtans hebben weinigen een boeiender leven geleid dan Frank Zappa. De meningen over deze biografie zijn dan ook verdeeld. Volgens sommigen is “Zappa” het definitieve levensverhaal van de componist en gitaarvirtuoos. Anderen zweren bij Zappa’s eerder verschenen autobiografie. Vergelijken is nutteloos, laten we het dus maar over Miles’ werk hebben.

Of misschien ook niet. Beste commenters, ik tel u dagelijks op de vingers van mijn (linker)hand. Laat het ons over iets anders dan Zappa hebben. Omeletten of gebruneerde patatjes. Ik zeg maar iets. DVLMN, =vic=, Jazz, Joram, Yvan, Thomas, Cemil, Zoom, Kevin, Maaike, e.a. where you at?

Een wedstrijdje schrijver raden ware mooi geweest. Maar vermoedelijk zou enkel DVLMN daarop geantwoord hebben, ongetwijfeld met het correcte antwoord ook nog. Geen wedstrijd dus. Maar raad er gerust op los. ‘Post a comment’ dient om uw zegje te doen, doe dat dus ook maar. Dat kan zelfs anoniem. Vrienden, familie, komraden, bondgenoten, leraars, voyeurs en volgelingen, kom! Commentaar!
