Video: Comedy Casino Cup

Filed under: the latest, Video - =lloyd= @ 12:57 am

Just a while ago the future cult comedy series “Willy’s en Marjetten” divided Flanders in two camps. The pro’s were excited about the typical absurd humor, the con’s obviously didn’t get it. Unfortunately the fans were outnumbered by the haters so the show was taken off the antenna.

Meanwhile the running jokes seem to go for hitstatus in popular youthculture, with 90% of the series covered on youtube and views reaching way into the 100.000’s it seems like “Willy’s & Marjetten” isn’t dead just yet.

More amazing even is the champion belt for brilliant product placement will go to Orval, the Luxembourgian beer. I have no clue if this was done on purpose or not, but I know I’ve been drinking more Orval lately. I’m a sheep yes, can’t help it. It’s a solid beer though!

And here’s the news: the new chief rocker of the Orval abbey is Lode Van Hecke. Born and raised in Roeselare! Hell, he even went to ‘t college, my old school! Now ain’t that something! All of a sudden I feel connected to them monks.

Here’s a bit of Orval flavoured humour, a fragment of “Willy’s & Marjetten” (no subtitles).

Find more “Willy’s and Marjetten” on the tube.

New Podcast - lloyd’s sloppy interpretation of an early Mondaymorning

Why not start the week with a new podcast episode? And why not host it myself?

The fact that it’s 4am in the Mondaymorning, tomorrow’s a heavily scheduled day, I don’t fully master my new mixer yet, the previous podcast hosted by BLA was utter brilliance and my mind is suffering from this jetlag-type-of-vibe, didn’t stop me.

I might take the mix offline in a week or so, so download quick, spread the word if you feel like, consider it an exclusive, just like the previous sloppy mixes that were uploaded (there offline now, aren’t they?)

So here it is:

on-point - 290103 lloyd’s sloppy sundaynightmix - (www.on-point.be)

It’s lo-fi, it’s sloppy, etcetera etcetera. But do enjoy the likes of Moodymann, The Dells, Marvin Gaye, Stefan Goldmann, Pepe Braddock, Kerri Chandler amongst many others. Total time: 56min.46.

Slowly but surely the ppklts family is extending in Brussels. In a very near future the clothing site will be launched and if all goes well I’ll be receiving my own ppklts golden backprinted hoodie early this week.

Looking very much forward to that, and while we’re at it, here are some sneak previews: (the brown looking prints are really gold, just to get your shine on, or to say with the words of the late J Dilla: “Let’s sparkle baby, make ‘em NV!”)

Adèle Renault - Alex Young Expo at Soundstation, Liège - the pics, the stories

It’s Fridaynight and we’re back. Back from the Southern part of the country and damn if that wasn’t nice. Of course the reason for the trip was the Adèle Renault/Alex Young expo at Soundstation, Liège.

If you’d happen to be in the neighbourhood, or if you’re into a nice citytrip to Liège, you’ve got to go check out the expo folks. Really. No shit.

But I’m no monster And I know there’s some people who simply won’t get there. So I’ve uploaded some pictures. Not the entire expo - that would be too much of a spoiler now woudln’t it? Just a neat little selection of personal favorites.

After the vernissage the man Billy Palmier and I were invited to stay in town for the night. An offer we couldn’t refuse and damn if we didn’t get a warm Liège welcome!

I’m digging Liège. It has this laid-back vibe and a wild fusion of the old and the new, architecturally speaking. The fact that the part of the city where we were staying was the isle of Liège obviously pushed the exoticness up another notch. Which makes it all the more brilliant!

An honourable mention to the killer stairsteps of the city too. Some serious mountainclimbing is going on over there!

Early in the morning we visited the local flea market, where I did the most absurd recorddeal thusfar. Seven records for the price of two meal cheques. Now ain’t that something? It was a lucky shot but the man accepted my offer and back home I discovered I had actually bought/traded me a killer Errol Dunkley and some wicked Erotic Drum Band madness. Which was nice.

Huge shout-out to the welcoming party in Liège, all considered part of the extended on-point family now!

Yes, you’ve read it, lloyd’s on flickr.com now. I had skipped this online feature back in the days, but I’m there now. Not that much of a photographer though, half of the pics are in my trademark blurred out style, but I guess that’s just my walk.

Have a look.

Borat Breaks

Since I’ve dedicated myself to keeping you posted on just about any move the brother Borat makes, I can’t let this one pass. The Borat Breaks lp is a fact. Don’t know about the rest of you but I know vic has been waiting for this one to see the light and needless to say I’m all in favour too. Turntablism won’t be the same after this one. And with that, it is now allowed to laugh at hiphop jams.

All credits to the turntablelab reviewers:
“…as soon as this movie came out, I knew this was gonna happen. In fact, I had frequently brought it up at lunch, like “Yo, Lemon, gotta make Borat Breaks! Hafta cash in, son! Just to have the precious ‘I like!’ sample on vinyl to scratch would be hot!” … ”

I say: Go in Layers!

Don’t know what it is but I must be “the Wintertype”.
Very much fan of this cold weather. A little shocked at first because I don’t think anybody saw it coming, except maybe a single expert.

As for clothing the cold is utter brilliance, right?
I mean, I can skip the selecting part of what tee to rock today.
I can basically wear all of my shirts in one week. (small collection, I know)

Currently I’m layered as follows:
t-shirt
t-shirt
polo
sweater

With the option of the aditional jacket when entering the outside world, which isn’t any colder since I’m still not closing the window, gives that frésh air, lovin it!

Great!

chances are your favourite blogger will be a little off-point this week. Fear not, I’ll still be here and plan to make some master moves, only not today. Your daily dose off on-pointness is not in danger, surely not. But it might just be a little less daily. (Or not, I don’t know)

Please accept my apologies.

Adèle Renault/Alex Young - Expo (Liège-Luik)

Every once in a while I’m impressed. By remarkableness, a thorough discussion on fonts or just the simple work of geniuses.

Not saying they’re geniuses but surely on top of this weeks agenda is the vernissage of the Adèle Renault/Alex Young expo, Thursdayevening at Soundstation, Liège/Luik.

A couple of weeks ago I met Adèle at the local jazz jams down the road. She was sitting in the crowd, making sketch after sketch and some drunk enthusiastic fan of her introduced me. Shorltly after that I became a fan. Outside of the venue the mam’selle did a huge piece on the wall of which I really should blog a picture (second priority on top of the agenda).

Adèle RenaultCheck out herspace, and you’ll notice where it reads 18. My guess is we’ll hear from this artiste, the oeuvre sure looks promising to me.

Vernissage 25/01 at 19h - expo is open untill 08/02

Video: Le Grand Content - The phylosophical potential of Powerpoint culture

Filed under: the latest, Video - =lloyd= @ 3:41 am

It’s been a while since, but just some time ago I was highly fascinated with the concept of “l’écriture automatique”. I had heard about this in dramaturgy class (yes, that’s something you didn’t know about lloyd), and as far as I understood it was a mindset in literature, where writers would just let loose of everything and start writing, going with the flow.

After the introductionary classes I kind of got into the concept and night after night forced myself into writing pages, packed with this absolute non-sense flow of conscience. This was before I started blogging. Eventually I got sick of it, but I still find it a concept worthy a try.

(For the readers who ever took courses in literature; I might have given the whole concept my personal twist, if so, I beg your pardon)

Why am I saying all of this? Well, whilst reading one of my favorite blogs “Presentation Zen” I came across this next video. After having seen it, it reminded me of the stream of consciousness approach to literature. Apparantly the makers are two German students who were on a quest for the phylosophical potential of … the Powerpoint culture!

Highly amazing indeed, but seriously, this is brilliant! The fact that it seems to be dedicated to Mary is a nice extra: A Film by Clemens Kogler together with Karo Szmit. Voice by Andre Tschinder.

On-Point Television - Dailymotion

Most of you are already familiar with the on-point tv channel, broadcasted through the tube. Because of extra posibilities and cooler features overall I decided to take the whole thing to dailymotion as well.

Latest additions: Lefties Soul Connection live at De Kreun and ESG live at Petrol. For the RSS heads, a feed has been added to the list, feel free to subscribe to the video rss feed.

To all colleague bloggers, here’s how you can integrate the on-point videochannel as a videoroll into your blog’s sidebar. Feel free to do so. It looks mighty fine and sure as hell it will give your site that extra bit of flavour your readers so dearly love! (Or you can dedicate a post to it, as ondasonora did yesterday)

Video: Helvetica - A documentary film by Gary Hustwit

Filed under: the latest, Video - =lloyd= @ 1:10 pm

I tried to explain how heavy an influence typography and fonts can be on our daily lifes. Having heard the “I don’t really care about the looks of a text”-remark over and over again I had the impression the majority of the people thinks arranging your text in a nice and subtle way is a waste of valuable time, and an act of superficiality pur sang.

Funny how in the following clip Wim Crouwel says exactly the same thing as Elke in the comicsans discussion: “The meaning should be in the text itself, not in the font.” Which makes the font all the more important, and not vice versa. Think about it.

Now, about the following clip. The bancomicsans movement is growing and maybe as a consequence the Helvetica crowd is swelling. We had the book “Helvetica - hommage to a typeface“. We had the designer t-shirt (don’t like it all that much though). In Australia a cafe named to the popular typeface was opened. But that’s all peanuts because guess what: a documentary is in the making. It looks very promising and the director even started running a blog about the filmmaking process.

Video: Lefties Soul Connection - Organ Donor (Live in De Kreun, Kortrijk)

I gave it my best shot to make this edit a little more exciting than the Moiano live videos (one and two). Lefties Soul Connection playing DJ Shadow’s Organ Donor live at De Kreun in Kortrijk. I hope you can dig it because this capture was quite the one-man-army action, which is kind of ridiculous to do, I realise now. The video is a 10-minute killer, half of it is intro, half of it is the actual track.

Big up to Lefties Soul Connection. Shout out to De Kreun. Whole lotta love to Theborntojazzmovement. And a good day to Thierry Steady Go as well, he’s a jolly good killer promoter and I think he’s rocking the Clark’s Wallabees, which is always a plus, as you will notice in the video!

Video: ESG Live in Petrol, Antwerp

This is the story of four ghetto sisters in the South Bronx, New York. They went by the name of E.S.G. and gained immortality by making killer music, simply structured and heavy on the bass. All-time classic being Moody.

I won’t get all biographical on you but here’s how allmusic.com puts it: “The four Scroggins sisters — Deborah (bass, vocals), Marie (congas, vocals), Renee (vocals, guitar), and Valerie (drums) — formed a group with the support of their mother, who bought instruments to keep her daughters busy and away from trouble”

The following is a short video of their performance in Petrol, Antwerp last November. Since their debut in the eighties the line-up was changed a few times (male players were kicked out one after the other), the revamped line-up includes Renee Scroggins’ daughters, Nicole and Chistel.
Filmed by digitalovers. Huge shout-out for that!

Schoonschrift is één iets, typografie is kunst. Zou er een ‘godfather of typography’ bestaan? De Jim Morisson onder de letterzetters? Allicht.

Zo’n mens die spreekt in lettertypes. Een schoon zicht moet dat zijn.

Of niet?

(En sta me meteen nog even toe deze aan de schandpaal te nagelen. Merci.)

Video: New Flip Kowlier - Ex-Drummer Soundtrack

Filed under: the latest, Video - =lloyd= @ 1:11 am

Filmfragmenten zijn reeds online: Great!

Flip Kowlier: De Grootste Lul Van ‘t Stad

wuk voeldje gie, meiske, voeldje mie?!”

“Sorry girls, seem to have a bit of a balance problem” versus “Ik ben ut evenwicht”?

Layers, gotta love ‘em right?

How to be remarkable

The Guardian made a top-10 list of advices on how to be remarkable. Seth Godin broke it down to a brief summary. And hell, I’ve found it inspiring!

There’s a lot of truth in these advices, and my guess is most people won’t like it. My top would have to be these:

___3. Being noticed is not the same as being remarkable. It’s easy to pull off a stunt, but not useful.

___4. Extremism in the pursuit of remarkability is no sin. In fact, it’s practically a requirement.

___6. Not everyone appreciates your efforts to be remarkable. In fact, most people don’t. So what? Most people are ostriches, heads in the sand, unable to help you anyway. Your goal isn’t to please everyone. Your goal is to please those that actually speak up, spread the word.

___9. If you put it on a T-shirt, would people wear it? No use being remarkable at something that people don’t care about. Not ALL people, mind you, just a few. A few people insanely focused on what you do is far far better than thousands of people who might be mildly interested, right?

I’m not a marketeer, far from it, so I don’t see this in the light of branding and advertising, I think it appeals to a great deal of everyday life (oral exams for instance…). Basically just grabbing life by the balls if you ask me. The continued effort of staying focussed on making moves. There’s a whole lot of things left to be done, ideas unexplored, don’t just assume you’re the only bright mind in town, tomorrow the next man will step up and pass you by.

By the way, the main reason why 80% of the visitors never posts a comment is because they don’t want to be remarked about. And that goes for a lot of people. Which is nice, I guess. Some of them might be spies, of course. (for the Dutchies: more on spies right here, and here too.)

My apologies for the corny use of images in this one, but it did need that extra touch. Plus, the upcoming gigs in Tavernier needed to be pointed out. Still, I’m not a marketeer. Merely a promoter.

Enemy of the State - in ‘t echt

Filed under: the latest, Video - =lloyd= @ 4:56 am

(Argosfestival, October 23, 2003 / 18.30-20.00 Brussels, Belgium)

Or as she states on her site: “‘Life: a user’s manual’ is a series of public performances and online mappings that examine the hidden stories captured by private wireless CCTV streams and how they intersect with the visible world around us.”

===Check it out.===

===Check the sequel.===

Het gaat dus hierover.

Video: Sketches of Frank Gehry - trailer

Filed under: the latest, Video - =lloyd= @ 12:51 am

Here’s a film I’ve got to see: “Sketches of Frank Gehry”. Now I don’t know jack shit about architecture (actually counting on some dedicated readers to enlighten my in that field) but I seem to recognize mr. Gehry’s buildings. Still have to go check out the Bilbao Guggenheimmuseum, that one kinda fell off my to-do-list, I’m putting it back on top right now. But first: the movie!

Onda Sonora - BLA - 2007 a l’aise mix

I had nearly counted my way into the new year when the dj off the night hit me with a neat looking cd-r. As you can see, the label reads “BLA, the 12″ Allah - a l’aise mix voor 2007″. Which means it’s a nice godlike mix featuring what one might call the now-sound, on the chill side of life.

Ain’t no half-stepping so I said: “BLA, if this is dope, can I podcast it?” So I asked the man.
“Sure,” he replied in a calm post 2006 way. Which was nice. And the mix was dope.

So here it is, for you and yours: BLA giving it to y’all OndaSonora style. That sweet futuristic sound, lovin’ it. (also peep their site: ondasonora.blogsome.com.

Remco, from Holland, OK?

That being said and done: Lift your lazy butts and get down with some commenting to the previous.

Happy 2007 to all!

A happy New Year to all of you. Meanwhile have a look at how it’s been done in Brussels. A brilliant piece of street art if you ask me!
